Global coating company, PPG, wanted to utilise their levy funds to progress their people, so they turned to our Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship.
At PPG, the team works every day to develop and deliver the paints, coatings and specialty materials that their customers have trusted for 140 years. Through dedication and creativity, they solve their customers’ biggest challenges, collaborating closely to find the path forward. With headquarters in Pittsburgh, PPG operates and innovates in more than 70 countries, and reported net sales of $17.7 billion in 2022. They serve customers in construction, consumer products, industrial and transportation markets, and aftermarket. In this case study, Training Manager, David Mainwaring, explains how BMS Progress’ Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship Standard proved crucial for their present – and their future.
We already had the levy funds available, and we wanted to give all interested staff members the opportunity to complete one.
To us, apprenticeships are a tool to develop people, enabling them to gain skills that take them to the next level. This means that when we have roles available, we’ll have the right people to call on, instead of going down the expensive route of external recruitment. Plus, it helps to retain and engage staff.
BMS Progress made sure the right student was on the right programme. They helped them complete the apprenticeship, making sure students were engaged from the start.
They use a real-time activity dashboard so we could see where learners were up to in the programme, and line managers were kept in the loop. BMS Progress was clearly committed to the students’ education.
The programme was very relevant, providing specific tools on communication, recognition, coaching and other pertinent subjects. Apprentices were able to successfully put this into practice, in matters like personal intelligence and holding difficult conversations.
The training gained from the apprenticeship puts people in good stead for future leadership. We’ve even seen a few promotions, including one to Key Account Manager.
Having this programme in place shows we’re committed to developing our team. And when people are really engaged with what they do, they perform better.
We’ve definitely seen a return on investment from the levy. The training has more than paid us back through the knowledge, skills and talent of the individuals on it.
